HAZARDOUS WASTE DROP-OFF DAY:  The Township hosts a Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day every May and October.  Twice a year you get a chance to clean out your garage and/or basement of hazardous items and solvents.  The Township accepts aerosol cans, bug sprays, weed killers, old cans of paint, motor oil, antifreeze, expired medications, fertilizer, batteries, cleaning solvents, etc.  Go to the Township website for the actual dates and times.

FRIENDSHIP CLUB NOW OPEN:  The Bloomfield Township Adult Day Service (informally called the "Friendship Club") officially opened in December 2006.  The center, located at 2222 Franklin Road just north of Square Lake Road, offers a variety of activities for Township seniors who have dementia or other memory impairments.  The goal of the Service is to provide a stimulating social environment to these senior residents.  For more information visit the BTSS website at www.bloomfieldseniors.org or call 248-335-2813.

STORM DRAINS ARE NOT GARBAGE CANS:  Anything that is dumped in a storm sewer will eventually end up in our lakes, rivers and streams.  Automotive waste (oil, gas, etc.) and household waste (cleaning fluids, paint, pesticides, etc.) should never be dumped in a storm sewer.  Bloomfield Township and the Oakland County Drain Commission have teamed-up to offer a 24-hour hotline for the reporting of illegal dumping into storm sewers.  If you witness any type of illicit discharge, please call 248-858-0931.

COMMUNITY LIAISON OFFICER:  The Bloomfield Township Police Department has assigned Officer Pete Matejcik to be the Township's new Community Liaison Officer.  Both of the Westchester Village Association boards have met with Officer Matejcik.  His function is to serve as a contact person for all Township residents regarding any safety issues or concerns, and to make the residents more aware of the types of services the Township can provide.  Feel free to call Officer Matejcik at 248-433-7724 if you have any questions or concerns regarding the safety of your neighborhood or home.

TOWNSHIP ORDINANCE VIOLATIONS:  Bloomfield Township employs enforcement officers to ensure that residents are not violating ordinances.  If you believe that a homeowner / neighbor is in violation of an ordinance or deed restriction, please call the Township ordinance enforcement office at 248-433-7721.

LOCAL ZONING ORDINANCE:
The most common problem areas that are regulated by Bloomfield Township Zoning Ordinance No. 265 are as follows:

OPEN STORAGE: Recreational, commercial or unlicensed vehicles and materials such as tools, equipment and trash may not be left in public view. Special variances require the approval of the Zoning Board of Appeals.

FENCES: All fences require a Township permit. They may enclose the side and rear yards and not exceed four feet in height. All other fences require approval of the Zoning Board of Appeals. (Corner lots are considered to have two front yards.) It is always helpful to get the local homeowner's association approval in advance. Invisible fencing for dog confinement requires a permit and electrical inspections. Dog confinement must be in the rear yard only and at least 16 feet from all property lines.

ACCESSORY STRUCTURES: The ordinance defines "structure" as anything constructed or erected, the use of which requires location on the ground or attachment to something having location on the ground. Therefore, any structure having an accessory use must have Zoning Board of Appeals approval before a permit can be issued. Association approval in advance is very helpful. Building codes require that detached buildings be located in a rear yard supported by concrete footings and slab. Air conditioning condensers, satellite dish antennas, dog runs, play structures, radio transmitting towers, etc. are classified as accessory structures. A/C condensers do not require Zoning Board approval if they abut the rear of the house. Maximum height of any accessory structure is 14 feet.

BUILDING PERMITS (new construction, alterations, additions, repairs): Any structural changes on property that cost $50 or more require a permit. Building plans should be first approved by the local association, then a permit taken out by the contractor or the homeowner. This requirement provides for inspections to protect against code violations or poor workmanship.

DOG LICENSES: Dog licenses are sold on a calendar year basis, going on sale December 1st at the receptionist/switchboard desk. Licenses are delinquent on April 1st. Licenses may be purchased thru the mail or in person, but either way we will need to see proof of rabies vaccination. Rates prior to April 1st are $5 for male or female dogs and $2.50 for unsexed dogs. After April 1st, the rates are $7.50 and $5 respectively. Township ordinance requires all dogs be licensed and confined to owner's property. If off said property, dogs must be under the control of a leash.

LITTER: No person shall deposit rubbish, refuse, waste, garbage, offal, feces, trash or other foreign substances of any kind any place except in proper receptacles for collection or in official dumps. This includes all property - personal, commercial and public. Violators are subject to court action and fines.

SOLID WASTE COLLECTION, RECYCLING AND DISPOSAL:
Utilizing the competitive bid process, all residential solid waste collection is consolidated undr a single contractor. The following services are available to homeowners:
- Curbside collection for commingled recyclables, such as newspaper, glass, cans, and selected plastics (collection on the same day as regular refuse collection). Recycling containers will be provided to each household.
- Seasonal collection of grass clippings, leaves, and bundles brush.
- Christmas tree collection and chipping.
- Weekly collection of bulky items and appliances at no additional cost. Call in advance to make arrangements (248-334-9444).
- Weekly curbside collection of general refuse.
- Periodic collection and disposal of household hazardous waste at the Township Hall.
Homeowners are required to separate recyclable from non-recyclable materials. By ordinance, all Township residents are required to participate in the solid waste collection program.

The Bloomfield Township ordinance enforcement inspectors in the Clerk's office handle the above types of problems. If you have questions, contact the Clerk's office. Please feel free to report any violations (your identity will not be revealed) to maintain Township standards.
